Is the bigger pack always cheaper? Five pairs from one shop
Everyone who shops knows the rule: take the bigger pack, it works out cheaper per kilo. I took five pairs of the same product from the same brand in two pack sizes and worked out what that rule is actually worth. The spread turned out wider than I expected: from 34 percent down to 45 percent up.
Five pairs, today's prices
- Roasted buckwheat Plony Natury: 400 g for 2.99 zł (7.48 zł/kg) against 900 g for 4.45 zł (4.94 zł/kg), 34 percent less
- Tomato paste Pudliszki: 90 g for 2.99 zł (33.22 zł/kg) against 190 g for 4.99 zł (26.26 zł/kg), 21 percent less
- Ground coffee Woseba Mocca Fix Gold: 250 g for 17.95 zł (71.80 zł/kg) against 500 g for 34.49 zł (68.98 zł/kg), 4 percent less
- Camembert Président natural: 120 g for 6.99 zł (58.25 zł/kg) against 170 g for 9.99 zł (58.76 zł/kg), 1 percent more
- Black peppercorns Kamis: a 16 g sachet for 2.49 zł (155.63 zł/kg) against a 42 g grinder for 9.49 zł (225.95 zł/kg), 45 percent more
The shop works out every one of those per-kilo prices itself and prints them on the product page, right next to the pack price.
Where the rule really works
Best of all on dry goods with a long date. Those same 900 grams of buckwheat bought in 400 g bags cost 6.73 zł, and 4.45 zł in one big bag. That's 2.28 zł on a product that sits in the cupboard for months and certainly won't go to waste.
Tomato paste behaves the same way: the small tin is handy, but it costs 21 percent more per kilo.
Where it stops working
Ground coffee: 500 grams in one pack instead of two 250 g packs saves 1.41 zł on the whole purchase. It's there, but it isn't worth a walk to another aisle.
Camembert is the case where the bigger pack is fractionally dearer: 58.76 zł per kilo instead of 58.25. Those 51 groszy per kilo will ruin nobody, but they show nicely that the word "bigger" promises nothing on its own. The ingredients are identical on both: milk, salt, calcium chloride, rennet, lactic acid bacteria and Penicillium candidum.
The trap: a bigger pack can be a different product
The Kamis pepper looks like a scandal until you look at the photo. The 16 g sachet is pepper. The 42 g pack is a glass grinder with pepper inside. Same black peppercorns, same brand, an entirely different thing on the shelf.
Counted plainly: 42 grams of pepper at the sachet price would cost 6.54 zł. You pay 9.49 zł, so 2.95 zł goes on the grinder. That's a fair trade, because you get the grinder and you can keep using it. The mistake starts when you buy one every month thinking you're buying pepper.
What to do at the shelf
The price per kilo is on the shelf label and on the product page online. The shop does the arithmetic for you, so the only thing left is to look at it before the bigger pack goes into the trolley. Two things to check: whether it really is the same form of the product, and whether you'll get through the larger amount before it spoils.
