The dearest coffee in the shop makes the cheapest cup
On the coffee shelf, the per-kilo price the shop helpfully prints at every item stops meaning anything. Nescafé Classic instant costs 184.95 zł per kilo. Nescafé Dolce Gusto Americano capsules: 183.75 zł per kilo. Same brand, practically the same price per kilo. And a cup of the first costs 37 groszy, a cup of the second 1.56 zł. Four times more.
The whole shelf converted to a cup
Assumptions below, today's prices:
- Nescafé Classic instant 200 g: 36.99 zł (184.95 zł/kg), a cup 0.37 zł
- Jacobs Krönung instant 200 g: 41.99 zł (209.95 zł/kg), a cup 0.42 zł
- Woseba Mocca Fix Gold beans 1 kg: 67.99 zł (67.99 zł/kg), a cup 0.48 zł
- Woseba Mocca Fix Gold ground 500 g: 34.49 zł (68.98 zł/kg), a cup 0.48 zł
- Jacobs Krönung beans 1 kg: 89.99 zł (89.99 zł/kg), a cup 0.63 zł
- Jacobs Krönung ground 500 g: 45.99 zł (91.98 zł/kg), a cup 0.64 zł
- Jacobs Krönung ground 250 g: 25.99 zł (103.96 zł/kg), a cup 0.73 zł
- Nescafé Dolce Gusto Americano, 16 capsules 136 g: 24.99 zł (183.75 zł/kg), a cup 1.56 zł
The per-kilo ranking and the per-cup ranking are two different lists. The dearest coffees per kilo make the cheapest cups, and capsules, which cost as much per kilo as instant, make a cup four times dearer.
The dose decides everything
Instant goes into the mug one level teaspoon at a time, about 2 grams. That's not our assumption: Nescafé itself prints "100 cups" on the 200 g jar. For ground and beans we count 7 grams per cup, a single espresso's worth; if you go heavier, Turkish style, the cost grows in proportion but the order of the list doesn't change.
A capsule is a different mechanism: you don't choose the dose. Inside sits 8.5 grams of ground coffee and that's what you use every single time, because that's how the pack is designed. You pay instant prices per kilo and brew like a generous hand with ground coffee, minus the option of sprinkling less.
On a yearly scale
At two coffees a day for a year:
- Nescafé Classic instant: 270 zł
- Woseba beans: 350 zł
- Jacobs Krönung ground 250 g: 533 zł
- Dolce Gusto capsules: 1,140 zł
Between capsules and instant of the same brand there's 870 zł a year. For the record: a ready-to-drink can from the shop chiller, Starbucks Caffè Latte 220 ml, costs 7.89 zł, as much as 21 cups of instant, but that's a milk drink, a different category from the black coffee on this list.
An honest caveat
Instant, ground and capsule are three different products and three different tastes; we're not telling anyone to switch to instant for 200 zł a year. The point is the unit of counting: with products dosed in grams, the per-kilo price only compares products of the same form. Across forms, you compare the cost of one use. Exactly as the pepper grinder from the previous post wasn't a sachet of pepper, a capsule isn't a jar of coffee.
